February  2020 Holy Land Tour Itinerary

Saturday, February 29 – Departure

Depart from Washington Dulles International Airport on our transatlantic flight.

Sunday, March 1 – Jaffa

Upon arrival, a short tour will be taken of Jaffa Port.  This port is referenced in the Bible as being the port which Jonah departed from on his journey to Tarshish, where the Tribe of Dan resided, and the port-of-entry for the cedars of Lebanon to build the First and Second Temple.  Overnight and dinner will be at the Crowne Plaza Tel Aviv City Center.

Monday, March 2 – Caesarea Maritima/Galilee

We will visit Nazareth Village, a re-creation of a working farm and Galilean village as it may have been 2,000 years ago. It’s truly a window into the life of Jesus, Nazareth’s most famous citizen. We will enjoy a special lunch at Nazareth Village. Afterwards, it’s on to the Jezreel Valley to Tel Megiddo, the inspiration for James Michener’s “The Source.” Archaeological digs reveal over 20 layers of civilization, including fortifications of King Solomon and the water tunnel of King Ahab. Megiddo provides a magnificent view of the fertile Jezreel Valley, prophesied site of Armageddon, located at the crossroads of the ancient Via Maris. We will then have a viewpoint of Tel Yizreel before visiting the Muhraka Monastery, where Elijah the prophet is believed to have resided. We will then drive to the Roman port city built by Herod the Great, Caesarea Maritima, considered to be the point from which the gospel left the shores of Israel for the Gentile world, and the city where Peter showed Cornelius the way of salvation. Dinner and lodging will be in Tiberius at U Boutique Hotel.

Tuesday, March 3 – Galilee

This day alone is worth the trip! We are now literally walking in the footsteps of Jesus. You will take a memorable boat ride on the Sea of Galilee in a replica of the ancient wooden boat used in Jesus’ day. We will visit an ancient boat believed to be from Jesus’ time and discovered in the dry lakebed of the Sea of Galilee in 1986. Then we will travel on to Magdala, the home of Mary Magdalene. Next we stop at the Church of the Primacy of Peter, the scene where John 21 takes place. After stopping for lunch at Ktze HaNahal, we then continue to Capernaum to visit the synagogue and place where early Christians remembered Peter’s house. We will follow the paths of Jesus’ ministry, stopping on the Mount of Beatitudes before dinner and overnight at U Boutique Hotel.

Wednesday, March 4 – Northern Galilee

The day will begin with a drive to Caesarea Philippi (Banias Spring) where Peter confessed, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God” (Matthew 16:16). Following, we stop at Mt. Bental, one of Israel’s favorite mountain peaks for its panoramic views of the Golan Heights and Syria. Lunch will be at Tanourim. You will view the Valley of Tears and return to Tiberias where you will have the opportunity to be baptized in the Jordan River, and then on to dinner and overnight at U Boutique Hotel.

Thursday, March 5 – Jerusalem

Our first item of the day will be a drive down the Jordan Valley to Jerusalem where we make our first stop at Beit Shean. This location is best known for Beit Shean National Park where the history of Israel can be seen through archaeological remains from each historic period. Next, we visit local attractions in Jericho. We will visit Qaser el Yehud, the site where John the Baptist baptized Jesus. We then travel back to Jerusalem for the view from Mt. Scopus. Dinner and overnight will be at the Inbal Hotel.

Friday, March 6 – Jerusalem
This morning, we drive to the City of David, entering through the Warren Shaft. The City of David is now an archaeological park and one of the most intensely excavated sites in the area. We will look out from the Mount of Olives, then walk down to visit Dominus Flevit and the Garden of Gethsemane. We will visit the Jewish Quarter including the Broad Wall and the Western Wall Tunnels. After lunch, we travel to St. Peter in Gallicantu – the House of Caiaphas. We then visit the Upper Room referenced in the Book of Acts. Our final destination will be Zion Gate, one of the eight gates in the walls of the old city of Jerusalem. We will enjoy a special Shabbat dinner followed by lodging at the Inbal Hotel.

Saturday, March 7 – Bethlehem
We begin the day visiting Bethlehem. After lunch at The Shepherd’s Tower, Bethlehem, we visit the beautiful Church of St. Anne with its amazing acoustics, and walk along the Via Dolorosa to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. The afternoon will include free time to explore the area before our departure. We end our day at the Garden Tomb with lodging at the Inbal Hotel.

Sunday, March 8 – Jerusalem
Today begins with the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum, Israel’s memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. Our next stop will be the Wohl Museum of Archeology. It preserves six (6) compound houses from the Second Temple era. They are the largest and most significant Second Temple ruins that have ever been discovered in Jerusalem. Next we view the Southern Wall Excavations. Western Wall tunnels provide a glimpse of the remnants of Jerusalem from the days of the Second Temple, approximately 2,000 years ago. Dinner will be a Shabbat Dinner with a local Israeli family with lodging at the Inbal Hotel.

Monday, March 9 – Jericho

We start our day with a drive to Qumran. Next, we visit Masada, Herod’s great desert palace on an isolated rock plateau overlooking the Dead Sea. After lunch at Kibbutz Ein Gedi, we take a nature walk to the lower waterfall of Ein Gedi, an oasis and nature reserve, where David hid from Saul around the city of Jericho. Overnight and lodging will be at Beresheet Hotel.

Tuesday, March 10 – Mitzpe Ramon

A jeep tour of Mitzpe Ramon will start our day. Next, we will drive to the Arava Border, crossing over Eilat, and onto the Tabernacle at Timna Park. Here we will find a life-size model of the tabernacle God instructed to be built in the Book of Exodus. The day ends with dinner and lodging at Movenpick Resort Petra.

Wednesday, March 11 – Petra

We begin our day with visiting Petra. You can travel in a horse-drawn carriage if walking is a concern, or on foot through the deep and narrow passages which occurred naturally, carved years ago by erosion. The Treasury finally appears magnificently in view after emerging from what seems like a hundred turns in the ravine. Then to Madaba to see the mosaic floor from the 6th century, showing a map of the Holy Land as Christian pilgrims knew it. Overnight will be at the Kempinski Dead Sea Hotel.

Thursday, March 12 – Jordan

We will visit Mount Nebo, from which God showed Moses Canaan, the Promised Land. Next, we visit the site where John the Baptist was beheaded. Dinner and lodging will be at the Kempinski Dead Sea Hotel.

Friday, March 13 – Jordan

Time permitting, we will spend the first part of the day touring Amman. Afterward, we transfer to the airport for departure home.
